The number that isn't on the size chart
Most size charts tell you about your body. Chest 38 inches, waist 32, hips 40. Find your row, order that size.
What they don't tell you is the number that actually decides whether something fits: how much room the garment adds on top of those measurements.
It's called ease, and it's the difference between a shirt that skims and one that hangs like a tent. Two garments can both be labeled "Medium," both be cut for a 38-inch chest, and measure 40 and 46 inches across when you lay them flat. That's six inches of difference under the same label.
Nobody publishes it. It's the single most common reason online sizing fails.
What we do about it
We list flat garment measurements, not just body measurements. Chest, length, shoulder, sleeve — measured across the actual garment, laid flat. You can compare those numbers to a shirt you already own and like.
That's a more useful comparison than any size chart, because it removes the guesswork entirely. Your favorite shirt measures 21 inches across the chest; ours measures 21.5. Now you know.
And you can just ask us. Tell us the brand and size you currently wear and we'll tell you which of ours matches — including when the honest answer is that none of them does.
We'd rather talk you out of the wrong size than process the return. It's cheaper for both of us and considerably less annoying for you.
What we look for
Fabric weight before appearance. A lot of what's produced now is finished to feel good for five minutes and loses it after four washes, because softeners rinse out and short fibers shed. Weight and composition predict what happens in month three.
A cut that holds across the size range. Most brands fit on one sample size and grade outward. Done carelessly, that produces a garment that works for some customers and quietly doesn't for the rest.
Finishing where it isn't visible. Interior seams, seam allowance, how a zipper is set. These fail first, and they tell you most about how the rest was made.
Plenty doesn't clear those three. That's why the range stays small enough that we can say something specific about every item in it.
What we don't do
Chase trends. By the time one reaches the shops it's already fading, and buying into it guarantees a closet that expires on a schedule.
Inflate prices to discount them. The price is the price. It doesn't get marked up in September so it can be marked down in November, and there's no "was $89" that was never $89.
Manufacture urgency. No countdown timers, no "only two left" when there are two hundred. If something is genuinely running low, we'll say so once.
Overclaim. A shirt won't change your life. What good clothes do is quieter — you stop noticing them. No adjusting in the mirror, no second-guessing at the door, no thought about whether it suits the room you're walking into.
That's the whole ambition. Not transformation. Just being properly dressed and free to think about something else.
